What is the ICC?
The International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is recognised as proof of your ability to operate a boat safely. It is widely accepted by harbour authorities and charter companies, particularly across Europe and the Mediterranean.
If you plan to charter a boat abroad or cruise outside UK waters, an ICC is often required.
You can obtain an ICC in two ways:
- By completing an approved RYA course
- By passing a direct assessment if you already have the required experience
We will advise on the most suitable route based on your current level of experience and how you intend to use the qualification.
Types of ICC
The ICC is issued with categories that reflect the type and size of vessel you are qualified to operate.
Powerboat ICC (Up to 10m)
This category covers power-driven vessels up to 10 metres in length, including RIBs and small motorboats.
It is commonly used for:
- Holiday boat hire abroad
- Day cruising in coastal waters
- General recreational boating
For most people, this is the simplest and most direct route to obtaining an ICC, typically achieved through the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course.
Motorboat ICC (Up to 24m)
This category applies to larger motorboats and yachts up to 24 metres.
It is suitable for:
- Offshore cruising
- Chartering larger vessels abroad
- Owners operating bigger motor yachts
This level requires a broader understanding of navigation, passage planning, safety procedures and close-quarters handling.
Sail ICC
The Sail ICC applies to sailing yachts and confirms competence in both sail and auxiliary engine use.
It is relevant for:
- Chartering sailing yachts internationally
- Coastal and offshore sailing
- General yacht handling and seamanship
This certification demonstrates practical ability in sail handling, navigation and onboard safety.
Choosing the Right ICC
The correct ICC depends on the type of vessel you plan to operate and where you intend to use it.
In most cases:
- Powerboat users start with the Powerboat ICC under 10m
- Yacht owners or charterers may require Motorboat or Sail ICC categories
If you are unsure, we can advise based on your experience and intended use.
ICC Courses and Assessment
We offer ICC routes through recognised RYA training and assessment.
If you are new to boating, completing a course is usually the most effective option. If you already have experience, a direct assessment may allow you to obtain the certificate without repeating training.
