Q: What counts towards “days, miles and night hours”?

Logged time on a motor cruiser: days afloat, nautical miles run and hours at night. Keep a logbook (dates, vessel, role, miles, night hours) to present to your instructor.

Q: Can sailing experience count toward the motor prerequisites?

Experience should be on motor cruisers. Sailing-only time usually doesn’t meet the motor scheme’s practical prerequisites.

Q: Does own-boat time count?

Yes. Time skippering or crewing a suitable motor cruiser can count toward days, miles and night hours.

Q: How recent should my Day Skipper/Coastal theory be?

Recency helps. If your theory is older or rusty, we can provide a brush-up or recommend the right theory course.

RYA Helmsman (Motor)

A practical two-day course covering basic boat handling, engine checks and onboard safety. This provides a solid foundation for skippering in familiar waters.

RYA Day Skipper (Motor)

– 4 hours of night cruising
