These courses develop essential skills in navigation, seamanship, and vessel control for both beginners and those progressing to longer coastal passages.

Training is delivered by experienced RYA instructors, combining shore-based theory with extensive time on the water. You’ll learn key techniques including close-quarters manoeuvring, berthing, passage planning, weather awareness, collision regulations, and onboard safety procedures.

Courses follow the internationally recognised RYA syllabus and are suitable for both leisure boaters and those progressing towards Day Skipper (Motor) or ICC certification.

RYA Motorboat Courses FAQs

No. Training is delivered on our well-equipped school motorboat based at Hamble Point Marina. If preferred, we can also arrange own boat tuition so you can build confidence and practical skills on your own vessel.

Most motorboat courses run from Southampton and across the Solent. Typical course timings are 09:30 to 17:30, although this can vary slightly depending on the season, daylight hours and the specific course syllabus.

On successful completion, you will receive the relevant RYA certificate for your course, such as RYA Helmsman or RYA Day Skipper (Motor). Completion of RYA Day Skipper (Motor) can also make you eligible to apply for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

For Day Skipper (Motor), you should already have basic boat handling and navigation knowledge. We usually recommend completing RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship or having equivalent practical experience before taking the course.

For the ICC, the route depends on the type of boating you want to do and where you plan to use the certificate. We can advise on the most suitable and straightforward route based on your current experience.

Training takes place in realistic conditions whenever possible, as this forms part of practical learning on the water. If weather conditions become unsafe, we will adapt the course content, focus on suitable alternative skills, or reschedule where necessary to protect both safety and training quality.
Yes. We regularly run private motorboat courses for families, groups and teams. Training can be tailored to your experience level, goals and schedule, and can be delivered on our boat or on your own vessel.

RYA Helmsman is a practical entry-level course focused on basic boat handling, close-quarters manoeuvring and safe day-to-day operation of a motor cruiser. RYA Day Skipper (Motor) goes further, covering navigation, pilotage, passage planning and the skills needed to skipper a motorboat on short coastal passages.

Day Skipper (Motor) is not usually the starting point for complete beginners. It is better suited to those who already have some practical boating experience and a basic understanding of navigation and seamanship. If you are new to motorboating, we can advise on the most suitable first step.
