RYA Motorboat Courses FAQs
Do I need my own boat to attend?
Where do courses run and what time do they start/finish?
Most motorboat courses run from Southampton and across the Solent. Typical course timings are 09:30 to 17:30, although this can vary slightly depending on the season, daylight hours and the specific course syllabus.
What certification do I receive?
On successful completion, you will receive the relevant RYA certificate for your course, such as RYA Helmsman or RYA Day Skipper (Motor). Completion of RYA Day Skipper (Motor) can also make you eligible to apply for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
What are the prerequisites for Day Skipper (Motor) and ICC?
For Day Skipper (Motor), you should already have basic boat handling and navigation knowledge. We usually recommend completing RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship or having equivalent practical experience before taking the course.
For the ICC, the route depends on the type of boating you want to do and where you plan to use the certificate. We can advise on the most suitable and straightforward route based on your current experience.
What happens in bad weather?
Can you run private or family training?
What is the difference between RYA Helmsman and Day Skipper (Motor)?
RYA Helmsman is a practical entry-level course focused on basic boat handling, close-quarters manoeuvring and safe day-to-day operation of a motor cruiser. RYA Day Skipper (Motor) goes further, covering navigation, pilotage, passage planning and the skills needed to skipper a motorboat on short coastal passages.
Is Day Skipper (Motor) suitable for beginners?
Day Skipper (Motor) is not usually the starting point for complete beginners. It is better suited to those who already have some practical boating experience and a basic understanding of navigation and seamanship. If you are new to motorboating, we can advise on the most suitable first step.
