RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course / ICC Licence

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course builds on basic boating knowledge and focuses on developing confident boat handling, safety awareness and decision-making on the water. Training is weighted heavily towards practical skills, with supporting theory delivered throughout the course.

You’ll train over two days and cover a wide range of real-world scenarios, progressing from low-speed control through to planing speed handling, navigation awareness and emergency situations.

You’ll learn how to:

You’ll receive everything you need to become a confident powerboat operator, with expert instruction and extensive hands-on practice throughout the course.

• Prepare the boat and crew, including personal safety equipment
• Carry out pre-start checks and engine procedures
• Use kill cords correctly
• Handle a powerboat confidently at low speed (ahead and astern)
• Come alongside, depart and secure using lines and springs
• Pick up and secure to a mooring buoy
• Turn and manoeuvre in confined spaces
• Handle a powerboat at planing speed, including trim and lookout
• Anchor safely and correctly
• Plan and respond to man overboard situations (drift-down and into-wind)
• Understand tides, weather and basic navigation principles
• Use charts, buoyage and GPS plotters
• Respond to emergency situations including towing, fire and disabled craft
• Understand IRPCS (Collision Regulations) and apply them on the water

By the end of the course, you’ll be operating independently and confidently in a variety of conditions.
