This powerboat tidal handling training session is a bespoke, practical experience designed to help skippers build real confidence when manoeuvring in tidal waters.
Delivered by experienced instructors at Associated Marine Training, these sessions help you understand how to work with the tide rather than against it — improving boat handling, positioning and decision-making in close-quarters situations.
This training is ideal if you already have basic boat handling skills but find tidal marinas, flowing rivers or berthing in tide-affected conditions challenging or lacking confidence.
Our tidal handling sessions combine targeted theory with hands-on practical coaching in a small-group environment.
Training is scheduled during selected months of the year, usually February through to May, when tidal conditions on the Beaulieu River provide an ideal real-world learning environment. Sessions are planned around suitable tides to ensure the most effective and realistic experience.
What You’ll Learn
Focused Tidal Theory
– How tidal flow behaves in rivers and marinas
– Identifying areas of stronger flow, slack water and eddies
– Using tide and flow to assist manoeuvres rather than working against it
– Understanding pivot points, prop walk and tidal set
– Planning safe and controlled approaches
Practical Tidal Manoeuvres
– Approaching finger berths and coming alongside in tide
– Holding position and managing drift
– Using short, effective bursts of power
– Recovering safely from misjudged approaches
– Instructor demonstrations followed by guided practice
Training is delivered in a calm, supportive environment, allowing you to build confidence progressively.
This training session is ideal for:
- Boat owners moored in tidal rivers or marinas
- Skippers wanting more confidence in tidal conditions
- Motorboat owners returning to boating after time away
- Skippers upgrading to a larger or heavier vessel
- Crew members wanting to assist more effectively during berthing
- Anyone looking to build confidence when manoeuvring in tide
No formal powerboat qualifications are required.
This session is best suited to boaters who already have a basic understanding of boat handling and want to improve their confidence and control in tidal environments.
Experience equivalent to RYA Powerboat Level 2 or similar is recommended.
This is a confidence-building skills session rather than a formal RYA syllabus course.
Training takes place in Southampton and across the Solent, using tidal rivers and marina environments to provide realistic, hands-on experience.
Initial sessions are based on the Beaulieu River, where tidal flow offers an excellent real-world training environment. Similar sessions have also been delivered in:
- Hamble River
- River Medina (Cowes)
- Lymington River
- Yarmouth
- Portsmouth
Alternative locations can be discussed depending on your experience, objectives and mooring location.
