The Royal Yachting Association Powerboat 2 Course is designed to provide you with a solid foundation in powerboating. The course will cover powerboat handling basic navigation and safety procedures. The course is mainly practical on the water training with essential theoretical knowledge, allowing you to further develop from a foundation developed by the Royal Yachting Association powerboat syllabus and delivered by experienced certified instructors.
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course equips individuals with the skills and foundational knowledge required to become a competent powerboat operator.
This course serves as the foundation for the International Certificate of Competence. The training focuses on boat handling and seamanship in powerboats, emphasising close-quarters manoeuvring at low speeds, man-overboard recovery, an introduction to planing speed driving, and an overview of collision prevention regulations.
You will learn various skills and manoeuvres including powerboat handling both slowly in confined spaces and at speed in open water, plus man overboard recovery. You’ll understand how a powerboat will react when using the controls with and against the elements, and how to use two kill cords system for safety.
Coming alongside confidently and leaving the dock safely makes for a happy day on the water for you and your crew, as does understanding weather forecasts. Manoeuvring onto a buoy anchoring and towing strategies will also be covered.

Boat handling techniques, including manoeuvring at low and high speeds, berthing and anchoring.
Navigational essentials, such as chart reading, buoyage systems, and passage planning.
Safety procedures, including understanding weather forecasts, emergency protocols, and collision avoidance.
Practical skills for handling different types of vessels and responding effectively to challenging situations on the water.
International Certificate of Competence (ICC):
Upon successful completion of the Royal Yachting Association Powerboat 2 course, you will have the opportunity to obtain the prestigious International Certificate of Competence (ICC). The ICC is recognised world wide as proof of your competence to operate a powerboat up to 10 metres in length.
