A chartplotter can place your boat on the screen to within a few metres, show your speed over the ground and draw a neat track behind you. That convenience is hard to ignore. But do you still need paper charts on a Motorboat? It is not really a question of choosing between old and new. It is about understanding what each method does well, where each can catch you out, and what level of seamanship you want on board when conditions become less forgiving.
For most leisure boaters, the sensible answer is not choosing one and rejecting the other. It is understanding how both work, then using them properly.
Why paper charts still matter alongside a chartplotter
It is easy to assume electronic navigation has settled the issue. On a calm passage in good visibility, a modern plotter is faster, clearer and easier to update during the day. It reduces workload and gives a quick picture of your position in relation to buoys, shallows and harbour entrances.
The problem is that ease can encourage passivity. If you follow the magenta line without checking what is around it, you can stop thinking ahead. That matters in busy areas such as the Solent, where traffic density, strong tides, shallow patches and shifting conditions demand active decision-making.
Paper charts ask more of the skipper. You need to plot, measure, estimate and keep track of your progress. That is slower, but it also builds awareness. You are less likely to look only at the next waypoint and more likely to take in the wider picture – tidal gates, escape options, clearing lines, depth trends and areas of concentrated traffic.
What chartplotters do better
For real-time navigation, chartplotters are excellent tools. They provide immediate position fixing, clear route display and useful overlays such as speed, heading, AIS targets and depth data where connected. In reduced visibility or when entering an unfamiliar harbour, that quick reference can reduce uncertainty and support better boat handling.
They are also practical when workload rises. If you are managing crew, keeping a lookout, checking the weather and handling the boat in a cross tide, a live moving display is valuable. You do not need to stop and plot every position by hand to maintain situational awareness.
Chartplotters also help with accuracy over short timeframes. If you need to confirm your track through a buoyed channel or monitor your set and drift, the display can reveal changes quickly. On a Motorboat making good speed, that immediacy is useful because small errors develop faster than they do at displacement pace.
That said, plotters are only as good as the data, setup and interpretation behind them. Zoom level can hide hazards. Alarms can be ignored. Waypoints can be entered incorrectly. A highly accurate position does not guarantee a safe route.
Where chartplotters can catch skippers out
The common weakness is over-reliance. A plotter shows where you are. It does not make judgements for you.
If a route has been built carelessly, the plotter will still guide you along it. If your chart card is outdated, the screen may look convincing while missing relevant detail. If you focus too much on the display, your lookout suffers. In confined or busy water, that can become a genuine safety issue.
There is also the question of failure. Power loss, damaged equipment, water ingress, poor GPS reception or a simple screen fault can leave you without your main navigation reference. That does not happen every day, but it happens often enough to deserve proper planning.
A useful rule is this: if losing the plotter would leave you uncertain of your position, your navigation routine is too dependent on one device.
What paper charts still do very well
Paper charts are slower, but they give a broader planning picture. Spread out on the table, they show the shape of the coast, the relationship between hazards, the run of the tide and the options available if the weather changes. That wider view helps skippers think ahead rather than react late.
They are also independent of batteries, wiring and software. If your electronics fail, a paper chart, a compass and a log still allow you to continue safely, provided your basic skills are in place.
More importantly, paper charts support understanding. Plotting a course, applying variation and tidal stream, and checking depth contours all force you to engage with the passage. You begin to see why the boat is ending up where it is, not just where the screen says it is now.
That matters for confidence. A skipper who understands why the route works is usually calmer when something changes.
The limits of paper navigation
Paper charts are not magically safer just because they are traditional. They have weaknesses too.
They depend on accurate plotting and regular position fixing. If you are distracted, behind the boat or rusty on the method, your estimated position can drift into optimism. On a faster craft, that gap between plotted and actual position can grow quickly.
In poor visibility, paper navigation also places a heavier demand on time and concentration. You may need to steer, keep lookout and update the plot at the same time. For a short-handed crew, that can be unrealistic.
There is also a practical issue. Some skippers carry a chart but have not used one properly for years. In that case, the chart is not a backup system. It is just paper on board.
Using paper charts and chartplotters together
The best method often depends on the situation.
For passage planning, paper charts remain extremely useful. They help you think in terms of the whole trip, not just the next leg. You can mark clearing bearings, note danger areas and identify fallback harbours before leaving the berth.
Under way, the chartplotter usually becomes the primary navigation tool because it is efficient, easy to monitor and allows you to react quickly as conditions change.
In busy inshore waters, using both together is often strongest. Plan on the chart, monitor on the plotter, and keep checking that each agrees with what you can actually see outside.
This is especially relevant around tidal areas of the South Coast, where buoyage, traffic and streams can make a route look simple on screen while demanding more thought in practice. A line between two waypoints may cross an area that is technically passable but poor seamanship at that state of tide or in that weather.
Good navigation is about more than equipment
One of the most useful things practical navigation training shows is that confidence does not come from owning more electronics. It comes from understanding what the tools are telling you, what they are not telling you, and what to do when the picture changes.
One useful way to think about navigation is through the APEM model used in marine training. Assess the situation using all available information, plan the route and alternatives, execute the passage using the most appropriate navigation tools, then monitor your position continuously rather than relying on a single source. Whether you are using a paper chart, a chartplotter or both, the principle is the same: keep checking that what you expect matches what you are actually seeing.
Skippers who learn only on a chartplotter often become quick with menus but weaker at mental positioning and passage awareness. Skippers who learn only on paper sometimes struggle to make efficient use of excellent modern equipment. Neither extreme is ideal.
A well-rounded navigator can read the water, identify marks, interpret the chart, use electronics efficiently and continue safely if one layer fails. That is a much stronger position than being loyal to one method.
A practical approach on board
For most leisure Motorboat use, the sensible approach is straightforward:
- Plan the route on paper or at least review it in a way that shows the wider area, hazards and alternatives.
- Use the chartplotter as your primary live navigation reference under way.
- Cross-check with visual marks, depth, buoyage and tidal expectation.
- Carry an appropriate paper chart and know how to use it.
- Keep a basic note of position, heading and progress on longer passages so that losing power does not mean losing the plot entirely.
This is not about doing everything the hard way. It is about avoiding a single point of failure while keeping your situational awareness high.
So, do you still need paper charts on a Motorboat?
If the question is speed, convenience and live awareness, the chartplotter wins. If the question is backup, big-picture planning and understanding, paper charts still earn their place.
The answer is not choosing one over the other. It is using each for what it does best. Let the chartplotter make navigation more efficient, and let paper charts strengthen your planning, understanding and decision-making.
