RYA Motor Boat Cruising Courses Prerequisites

We have listed below the course prerequisites for the majority of the courses in the RYA Motor Cruising scheme. For further information, please contact us, and we will do everything possible to assist you.

Start Motor Cruising:

  • Prerequisites: None required
  • Description: This entry-level course introduces complete beginners to motor cruising, teaching the skills needed to be a useful crew member on a small motor vessel.

 

Helmsman:

  • Prerequisites: None required
  • Description: A two-day course covering basic boat handling, engine checks, and safety. Ideal for those new to motor boating.

 

Day Skipper Motor:

  • Prerequisites: Basic helmsmanship ability. 5 days, 100 miles and 4 night hours onboard a motor cruiser. Navigation and theory knowledge to Day Skipper Shore based level.
  • Recommended Courses: Day Skipper Theory
  • Description: Take charge of short passages under instruction, with help and advice from your instructor. Suitable for those with some boating experience.

 

Coastal Skipper Motor:

  • Prerequisites: 15 days, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, 8 night hours. Boat handling to the standard of the Day Skipper practical motor cruising course and navigation to the standard of the Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster Offshore shore based course.
  • Recommended Courses: Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory
  • Description: For the more ambitious skipper to improve their skills, take charge and learn to make full use of the boat on longer, more complex passages.

The RYA Motor Cruising Scheme provides structured training for both new and experienced boaters. Whether you’re starting out or preparing for complex passages, the following outlines the key prerequisites and guidance for each course:

Start Motor Cruising
  • Experience Required: None
  • Ideal For: Absolute beginners
  • Description: Introductory course teaching crew skills on small motor vessels. A great place to start your boating journey.
RYA Helmsman
  • Experience Required: None
  • Ideal For: Novice boaters and aspiring skippers
  • Description: Two-day practical course covering safety, basic boat handling, and engine checks.
RYA Day Skipper (Motor)
  • Experience Required:
    • Basic helmsmanship ability
    • 5 days onboard a motor cruiser
    • 100 nautical miles logged
    • 4 night hours
    • Theoretical knowledge to Day Skipper shore-based level
  • Recommended Course: RYA Day Skipper Theory
  • Description: Learn to skipper short passages by day under guidance. Ideal for those with some boating experience.
RYA Coastal Skipper (Motor)
  • Experience Required:
    • 15 days at sea
    • 2 days as skipper
