International Certificate of Competence (ICC) – Boating License for International Waters

Once you have your Royal Yachting Association Powerboat 2 certificate you can then apply for the International Certificate of Competence for 10m boats with a single engine.

There are several benefits to having an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for operating pleasure craft:

The ICC is the only boating license formally recognized by the United Nations, meaning it’s widely accepted worldwide. This allows you to charter or rent boats in many countries without needing to obtain their local license.

With an ICC, you can navigate foreign waters with more confidence, knowing you have a recognized document demonstrating your competence. In many countries you should have an ICC and a short range radio certificate with you when on board your own or a charter boat. This can be especially reassuring if you encounter authorities while abroad.

Some insurance companies may require or offer discounts for holding an ICC, particularly when boating internationally.

Having a single, internationally recognised certificate eliminates the need to carry multiple national licenses when traveling, simplifying your documentation and potentially avoiding administrative hassles abroad.

The ICC typically qualifies you for larger boats and larger engines than national licenses allow, expanding your boating options.

However, it’s important to note that:

  • The ICC doesn’t replace local regulations or safety requirements. You should always familiarize yourself with the rules and customs of the waters you’re navigating.
  • Not all countries require or fully recognise the ICC. Check with the specific country you plan to visit for their regulations.
  • The ICC itself isn’t a training course. You need to acquire the necessary boating skills and knowledge through accredited training programs beforehand.

Overall, the benefits of an ICC can be significant for international boaters, offering recognition, convenience, and potentially insurance advantages. However, it’s essential to research specific requirements and ensure you possess the necessary skills and knowledge for responsible boating wherever you venture
