Gaining Commercial Endorsements

Working within the marine Industry

To work within the marine industry you will either require MCA or RYA certificate of competence. Once you have the relevant certificate of competence from the RYA or MCA You can then work within the marine industry. Small craft (under 24 meters) are certified by the MCA for the safe use and safe manning under the MCA small craft codes of practice.

Entry-level positions on larger vessels are also attainable with a Royal Yachting Association qualifications and an STCW95 

Which Royal Yachting Association courses can be commercially endorsed?

Course completion certificates:

  • RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling Certificate   
  • RYA Day Skipper practical course completion certificate supported by a Day Skipper shorebased course completion certificate. The Day Skipper shorebased course may be undertaken online or in the classroom. In either case, the exams must be invigilated.

Certificates of competence:

  • RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence
  • RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence
  • RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence
  • RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence 

The certificate or the certificate of competence that you will need will depend on the role you will be taking on, the vessel and the waters the vessel will be operating in.

If you have a standard or leisure qualification you will then need the following:

  • Professional Practices and Responsibilities
  • Medical fitness certification (ENG1 or ML5)
  • RYA Basic Sea Survival certificate or STCW95 personal survival techniques
  • RYA Short Range Radio Certificate (VHF) or GMDSS
  • RYA First Aid

The medical fitness certificate can be completed by a GP with authority to do so. A list can be found here.

How do I apply for a standard commercial endorsement?

You will need all the documents above plus:

  • A commercial endorsement aplication form
  • Original Certificate of Competence
  • Passport size photo
  • The fee as noted on the application
